Linen is the oldest cloth in continuous use and it has one behaviour that no finish has ever removed: it creases, immediately and permanently, wherever it is folded. Most makers treat that as a problem and blend it away. Cutting a structured cropped shirt in one hundred percent linen is a decision to let the creasing happen and to build a garment that looks better for it, because a linen shirt that has been worn carries a record of the day in a way that cotton does not.
The construction is deliberately quiet so the cloth can do the talking. The front buttons are concealed, so the placket reads as an unbroken panel and there is nothing interrupting the front. The strap sits across the back, as it does on the leather outershirts. Nothing else. Linen has more body than cotton at the same weight and less drape, so the cropped, structured cut holds away from the body rather than falling against it, which is what makes this read as a shirt jacket rather than a blouse.
Why we selected it
We already had the outershirt pattern in leather and in organdy, and this is the one that gets worn in July. That is not a small thing in Santa Fe, where the summer is long and dry and linen is the only cloth that makes sense in it for months at a stretch. Concealed buttons on a linen crop is also a restrained choice from a house that is not often described that way, and restraint is usually what we are looking for.
The outershirt runs through this house in leather, in cotton, and here in linen, and the pattern stays constant while the cloth changes everything about how it wears.
Materials and construction
One hundred percent linen, made in Italy. Cropped, structured cut with a concealed front button closure and a strap across the back. Colour: Dinge.
Fit notes
Cropped and cut with structure, so it sits away from the body rather than following it, and the linen has enough body to hold that shape without interfacing. Linen softens substantially over the first several wearings and washings and never entirely stops, so this will feel firmer on day one than it will in a year. It layers over a close base and takes almost nothing underneath it.
Styling
Open over a tank or a cropped tee in summer, closed over high-waisted trousers when you want the concealed front to read as a single panel. Linen against black cotton is the most reliable version of this.
Care
Linen washes well and gets better for it, so wash cool and hang to dry rather than sending it out. Do not tumble dry, which is what breaks the fibre over time. Press it if you want it flat, and accept the creases if you do not, because they are coming back within the hour either way. Our care guidance covers the general ground.
