Rick Owens F/W 25 AL Dress – Indigo

A wool dress is a rarer thing than it should be, and the reason is that wool is difficult in this application: too heavy and it hangs like a coat, too fine and it is transparent, and either way it wants a lining that a simple dress cannot carry. Getting a new wool to work at dress weight is a real piece of sourcing, and it is what this garment is actually about.

What it buys you is a dress you can wear in January without layering it into something else. It breathes, it regulates, and it holds a shape from the shoulder without any internal structure at all. That last point is what the boat neck depends on: a wide neckline running nearly shoulder to shoulder has to be supported by the cloth itself, because there is nothing else holding it up.

The cut-out at the centre back is where the house shows itself. From the front this is an entirely reticent garment, long-sleeved, high-necked in effect, plain. Turn around and there is an opening. Owens has been doing exactly this for thirty years, putting the event at the back where the wearer cannot see it, and it is the detail that separates his work from minimalism, which is what this dress would otherwise be.

Why we selected it

We were looking for a winter dress that did not require a solution. Most do: something under it, something over it, tights, a slip. This one is finished as it stands, and it is warm, which is a combination we are asked for constantly and can rarely supply. We took it in both colours because the shape is quiet enough to carry two, and the wash on the indigo is different enough from the black to be a genuinely separate garment in a wardrobe.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent new wool. Made in Italy. Long sleeves, wide boat neck, cut-out at the centre back. From the Fall/Winter 2025 Concordians collection. In Washed Indigo and in Black.

The colour

Washed indigo is the more interesting of the two and the harder to place. Washing a wool after dyeing softens both the colour and the hand, so the blue arrives slightly faded and slightly uneven rather than flat, and a plain dress acquires a surface. It reads as a deep blue in daylight and nearly as black at night.

Fit notes

A wide boat neck sits on the shoulders and its fit is decided there, not at the bust. Pure wool with no elastane will relax over a day and recover at rest; it does not stretch to accommodate. The back cut-out rules out most conventional underwear, which is worth knowing before it is on.

Styling

With brown leather, which is the pairing indigo asks for and black does not. With a boot and opaque tights in the cold. Indigo against grey wool is better than indigo against black.

Care

Wool wants airing far more than washing. Fold it or hang it on a padded hanger rather than a wire one, since a wide neckline distorts easily at the shoulder, and dry clean only when it genuinely needs it. Our care guidance covers the general principles.
