Rick Owens Mega Bumper Low Sneaks

Bumper is a shoemaking word. It describes the rubber wrapping that runs around the base of an upper and joins it to the sole, and on a conventional sneaker it is a thin band you would never notice. Make it enormous and the whole architecture of the shoe changes: the upper appears to sit inside the sole rather than on top of it, and the eye reads a plain low-top as something considerably stranger.

That is all this shoe does, and it is enough. The upper is quiet cow leather with no panelling to speak of. Everything happens below the ankle. It is a more restrained object than the Geobasket and it produces a similar effect on the proportions of whatever is worn above it, which makes it the version for someone who wants the shape without the shaft.

Milk is the house’s off-white, and a pale shoe with a heavy sole is a specific and rather good decision: the mass reads as form rather than as weight, which a black one never quite manages.

Why we selected it

We wanted the platform in a low top, in a light colour, for the customer who is not going to wear a mid-calf sneaker. It covers a real gap. Pale footwear also does something in Santa Fe light that it does not do in London or New York, which sounds like an affectation and is simply true.

Fit notes

A platform sole does not flex the way a conventional one does, so the shoe walks differently and takes a few wearings to settle. Low-top sneakers of this build generally run close through the instep. Worth trying on.

Styling

Under a wide trouser or a cropped one; both work and they are different decisions. With a long skirt it does something genuinely good, because the mass at the bottom balances the length. Milk against black is the easiest and best version.

Care

A pale leather upper needs protecting from dirt rather than cleaning after it. Brush the sole, wipe the upper with a barely damp cloth, and let it dry naturally away from heat.
