Rick Owens F/W 25 Women’s Minimal Sneak
$972.50
Full grain is the specification worth knowing. It means the outermost layer of the hide has been left intact rather than sanded back to remove marks, which is what most leather has had done to it. Sanding produces a uniform surface and removes the densest, strongest fibres in the skin along with the character. Full grain keeps both, so the leather is tougher, it develops a patina instead of wearing through a finish, and every pair looks slightly different from the next.
On a pale shoe that decision shows. Milk is unforgiving, and a full-grain hide in an off-white will record the life it has had rather than staying blank. If that sounds like a drawback it is the same argument we make about raw denim, and it is the reason to buy this rather than something coated.
The shoe itself is deliberately quiet: under-ankle, six eyelets, an angled black stripe, and the house’s serrated shark-tooth sole. It is lined in calf leather throughout, which is why it feels finished on the foot in a way an unlined sneaker never does.
Why we selected it
We took the Minimal in both men’s and women’s because it is the shoe that answers the question we are asked most often about this house, which is what to buy first. It is recognisably Owens, it asks nothing of the wearer, and it is worn rather than admired. Buying it in both size runs was a single decision made twice, and we would rather say so than invent two reasons.
Materials and construction
Upper in 100% full-grain cow leather. Lining in 100% calf leather. Insole in 100% calf leather. Sole in 100% rubber. Made in Italy. Under-ankle height, shark-tooth sole, angled contrast side stripe. Colour: Milk with black.
Fit notes
A fully lined leather sneaker fits closer than an unlined one at first and eases as the lining settles. The under-ankle cut means less hold around the ankle than a standard low top. If you are between sizes and intend to wear these with a thicker sock, the larger is the safer choice.
Styling
With a long skirt, where the low cut keeps the ankle visible and stops the length reading as heavy. With a cropped trouser. Milk with black is the way it is built.
Care
Full-grain leather is meant to mark and should not be scrubbed. Wipe with a barely damp cloth, dry naturally away from heat, and hold the shape with trees or paper. We do not prescribe a conditioning schedule; a full grain hide generally wants less product than people give it. Our care guidance covers the general principles.
