Rick Owens Geobasket Sneakers

This is the shoe that made the category. When Owens first showed it in the mid 2000s it was called the Dunk, and after Nike objected to the resemblance it was renamed the Geobasket and stripped of anything that could be argued over. What survived the rename was the idea: a basketball silhouette blown up past all athletic purpose, in fine leather, made in Italy, and offered as design rather than as sportswear. Almost every designer sneaker of the twenty years since is downstream of it, which is a claim worth being careful with and which in this case holds.

The elements are all still here and none of them has been softened. The panels are oversized and geometric, so the shoe reads as a small number of large planes rather than as a complicated assembly. The tongue extends well past where a tongue needs to end, which is what gives the Geobasket its unmistakable front profile. And the sole is doubled in height, with the serrated edge the house calls a shark tooth, so the whole shoe stands on a visible slab.

It is a great deal of shoe. It has also been in production, essentially unchanged, for the better part of two decades, which is not something you can say about very much footwear.

Why we selected it

If you carry Rick Owens you carry the Geobasket. It is the piece a customer walks in asking for by name, and it functions as a reference point as much as a purchase. We also carry it because it has outlasted its own imitators, which is the argument we make about almost everything in the store and which this shoe proves better than most.

The Geobasket is the single most recognisable object Owens has made and the origin of an entire category of designer footwear.

Materials and construction

Upper in 100% cow leather. Sole in 100% thermoplastic rubber. Mid-calf height, oversized geometric panels, extended tongue, double-height shark-tooth sole. From the Spring/Summer 2025 Hollywood collection, shown at the Palais de Tokyo with a cast of roughly two hundred.

Fit notes

A tall sneaker with a substantial sole sits and walks differently from a low one, and the mid-calf shaft means the trouser has to be considered before the shoe is worn. The extended tongue takes up volume across the instep, so a foot with a high instep should be measured rather than assumed. This is a shoe to try on; we are happy to talk it through by phone if you cannot.

Styling

Under a wide trouser, where the shaft disappears and only the sole and toe register, or with a slim or cropped trouser where the whole shoe is visible and is the outfit. Both are correct and they are not the same decision. With black on black it becomes a silhouette rather than a shoe.

Care

Leather footwear on a heavy rubber sole wants brushing rather than washing, drying naturally and away from heat if it gets wet, and storing upright with the shape supported. We do not prescribe a conditioning interval; how often a leather upper needs attention depends entirely on how it is worn, and over-treating a fine leather is as damaging as neglecting it.
