Rick Owens Oversized LS Hoody

This is a hooded garment made as knitwear rather than as a sweatshirt, which is a different object entirely. Jersey is knitted and then cut and sewn like cloth; a knitted hoody is shaped as it is made, so it drapes from the shoulder the way a sweater does and the hood falls rather than sits. The surface here is rasato, the Italian term for a smooth, even, plain-faced knit, so the wool reads flat and quiet instead of textured.

Thulian Pink is the colour: soft, dusty, and closer to a faded rose than to anything bright. New wool means the fibre has not been previously used or reprocessed, which is why a knit this fine holds its shape.

Why we selected it

Lightweight knitted hoods are rare and this one is in a colour almost nobody else would have made. That is most of the reason. It is also an easy way to wear something from this house that does not read as black outerwear.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent new wool, made in Italy, in a smooth rasato knit. Colour: Thulian Pink. Hooded, long sleeved, falling beneath the hip.

Fit notes

This is cut large and it wears close, and both of those are true at once, so it is worth being precise about which is which. The pattern is the generous part: wide through the body, long in the sleeve, and falling well below the hip. The cloth is the other half. A smooth rasato knit in a lightweight new wool has almost no loft in it, so where a heavy jersey hoody of the same measurements would stand away from the body and add a size to the wearer, this one falls. The volume ends up reading as line rather than as bulk.

What that means in practice: it is a large garment that does not make you look larger, and it will go under a coat that a sweatshirt of the same nominal size would not. Judge it on the shoulder and the length rather than on the width, and take your usual size, since sizing down removes the drop that makes the cut work. Wool relaxes with wear across a day and recovers when folded and rested.

Styling and care

Under a black jacket, where the pink shows at the hood and the cuff. Over a straight trouser. Fold it, never hang it, air it between wearings, and hand wash in lukewarm water with a neutral wool detergent and dry flat when it needs it. Our care guidance covers wool in detail.
