Four-ply silk is made by plying four yarns together before weaving, which produces a cloth several times the weight of an ordinary silk, matte where a standard silk shines, and substantial enough to fall in its own lines rather than following the body. It is an expensive way to make a cloth and the temptation is to do something with it. This dress does the opposite. A crew neck, elbow-length sleeves, a straight body, on-seam pockets at the side, and a zip hidden at the back so there is no interruption anywhere on the front.

That restraint is the argument. A heavy silk is at its best when there is nothing competing with the way it hangs, and every seam, gather, or drape added to it takes something away. Put it in a t-shirt shape and the only thing left to look at is the cloth, which is precisely the point. The red orange does the rest: a matte four-ply holds a saturated colour with depth rather than glare, and a shiny silk in the same shade would read as costume.

Why we selected it

We wanted one dress in this house that requires no thought at all in the morning and still reads as a decision by the evening. A silk t-shirt dress with pockets is the whole answer, and it is the reason this one gets worn far more than the dresses bought alongside it.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent silk in a four-ply weave. Made in China. Red orange. Crew neckline, elbow-length sleeves, on-seam side pockets, and a concealed zip at the back.

Fit notes

Cut loose and drawn to hang from the shoulder rather than to fit, so it reads as a column rather than as a shape. It runs large. A four-ply silk has no stretch whatsoever, so if you want it closer to the body rather than easy, size down; if you want it as the house drew it, take your size. The weight means it will not cling in heat, which is most of the reason to own a silk dress rather than a jersey one.

Styling

Alone, with a flat shoe, which is the whole garment. Under the Cashmere Suiting Liam Blazer when it needs to be daywear. With the Sheer Wool Gauze Oversized Shirt open over it in the shoulder seasons, oatmeal against red orange, which is better than it sounds.

Care

A silk this heavy is a specialist garment and not a home one, and the weight is the reason: a four-ply holds an enormous amount of water and will distort under its own weight if it is handled wet. Dry clean. Our care guidance covers silk in more detail.
