Tibi Melee Crepe V-Neck Power Mesh Combo Dress

Crepe is made by twisting the yarn hard before it is woven. The twist wants to spring back, the finished cloth is held under that tension, and the surface goes faintly granular while the drape goes heavy and fluid at once. It is the reason a crepe dress falls in long unbroken lines where a plain weave would break into folds. What crepe will not do is hold a silhouette by itself, and that is the problem this dress sets out to solve. Rather than lining it, or interfacing it, or cutting it tight enough to be held up by the body, the house puts a power mesh layer underneath and lets that do the structural work. Mesh of this kind is a fine elastic knit that pulls in one plane and gives in another, so it can set a line without adding weight or bulk and without stiffening anything. The crepe is then free to be entirely soft. Standing still, the dress reads as one clean column with a deep V at the front. Moving, the outer layer travels and the inner one does not, which is a quiet effect and a genuinely expensive one to achieve. The deep side pockets are the detail that keeps the whole thing from reading as an evening dress, which is the point.

Why we selected it

A dress that solves its structure internally is a dress you can wear without thinking about your posture all night. That is rarer than it should be, and it is the reason we chose this one rather than a more obviously dramatic alternative.

Amy Smilovic founded Tibi in 1997, and the Melee Crepe is one of the cloths the house has built a whole group of pieces around rather than a single season.

Materials and construction

The crepe is one hundred percent wool. Made in China. Black. Plunging V neckline, deep side pockets, and a power mesh layer beneath the crepe. Power mesh is an elastic knit rather than a wool one, and we do not hold a separate composition for it, so the wool figure describes the outer cloth and not the whole garment. The house describes the crepe as an Italian virgin wool woven with a twisted yarn.

Fit notes

The crepe hangs from the shoulder rather than gripping anywhere, so the fit question is proportion rather than closeness. The mesh underneath sets the line and does not compress. A V this deep reads differently on different frames and is worth seeing on rather than judging flat.

Styling

Under the Cashmere Suiting Liam Blazer for daylight. On its own after dark, with nothing added, since the neckline and the pockets are already the two decisions in the outfit. With flat shoes rather than heels if you want it to read as clothing instead of as an occasion.

Care

A wool crepe over an elastic mesh is two materials with opposite requirements, and heat is what separates them: it flattens the crepe’s twist and it kills the recovery in the mesh.
