Tibi Compact Stretch Cashmere Mini Dress

Cashmere has a reputation for softness that works against it in a dress, because soft is exactly what a short knit dress cannot afford to be. The answer here is tension. The yarn is worsted, meaning combed straight and spun tight rather than left lofty, and it is knitted at high tension around an elastane core. The result is compact: a knit that does not sag at the seat, does not stretch out across a day, and has a smooth close face more like a jersey than a sweater. It still feels like cashmere against the skin, which is the entire reason to make it this way rather than in a synthetic that would behave identically and feel like nothing. The chest pocket is the only detail on the whole garment, and it is doing real work: it interrupts an otherwise unbroken surface, which is what keeps the dress from reading as a tube.

Why we selected it

This is the piece that gets worn far more often than the ones bought alongside it. It solves an evening without a decision in it, and it does not look like it is trying to, which is the harder half.

Materials and construction

Ninety percent cashmere and ten percent elastane, in a compact high-tension knit. Black. Patch pocket at the chest.

Fit notes

Cut short and close, with the elastane giving it real recovery rather than the illusion of it, so it returns to shape rather than growing across an evening. A compact knit reads firmer on the body than a loose one and is more forgiving than a woven of the same closeness.

Styling

Under the Cashmere Suiting Liam Blazer, cashmere on cashmere in two entirely different densities, which is more interesting than it sounds. Under the Sheer Wool Gauze Oversized Shirt worn open. With flat boots in winter, since the length is asking for a proper shoe rather than a delicate one.

Care

A cashmere and elastane knit must never see heat, because heat is what destroys the elastane’s recovery permanently and there is no repairing it afterwards.
