Tibi 4Ply Silk Fringed Dress

$1,195.00

Most silk in clothing is thin, and thinness is what people hold against it: it clings, it creases where you sat, and it telegraphs everything underneath. Four-ply silk is a different proposition entirely. Four yarns are plied together before weaving, producing a cloth several times the weight of a standard silk crepe, with a dry matte surface instead of a shine and enough substance to fall in its own architecture rather than following the body. It is the silk that behaves like wool, and it is the reason this dress can be cut with a plain crewneck and cap sleeves and still be the most decided thing a person is wearing. The front is deliberately quiet. Everything happens at the back, where the dress is open and the fringe hangs across the opening, so that standing still it reads as a solid column and moving it separates. Fringe is a device that only works on a cloth heavy enough to keep it hanging straight, which is the argument for the four-ply again. The deep side pockets are the detail that decides what the dress is for: you can put your hands in them, and a dress you can put your hands into is a dress you can wear to something that is not an event.

Why we selected it

We were looking for one evening piece that does not announce itself as an evening piece. This is it. The front of this dress could be worn to lunch and the back could not, which is a better joke than most clothes are capable of.

Amy Smilovic founded Tibi in 1997, and this is the house working at its most formal without changing its register.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent silk in a four-ply weave. Made in China. Black. Crewneck, cap sleeves, deep side pockets, an open back concealed by fringe, and a concealed zip closure.

Fit notes

Cut A-line and falling long, so it moves away from the body below the hip rather than following it. A four-ply silk has almost no stretch, so the size that fastens comfortably at the shoulder and chest is the size. The open back means this is worn without a conventional bra, which is worth knowing before it arrives rather than after.

Styling

Alone. If anything goes over it, the Cashmere Suiting Liam Blazer, which covers the back and turns the dress into daywear, and comes off again later. Flat shoes make it better, not worse.

Care

Silk of this weight, with fringe on it, is a specialist garment and not a home one. The fringe is the part a general cleaner will damage, so say so when you hand it over. Our care guidance covers silk in more detail.
