Tibi Artemis Beading Tank Dress

Tulle is not a cloth so much as a net. The threads are twisted around one another rather than crossed over and under, which locks the mesh so it cannot slip, and it is that lock that allows a fabric to be almost nothing and still hold a shape. Nylon tulle in particular is strong and springy where a silk tulle is fragile, and that matters here more than anywhere, because beading is weight. Every bead on a net is a point load hanging on a few threads of mesh, and a weak tulle sags around each one permanently until the whole garment reads as tired. A fine Japanese nylon tulle is the rare thing that can disappear visually and still carry the motifs without distorting under them.

Then the design decision, which is the one that makes the dress wearable rather than merely festive. The beading is abstract and scattered rather than an allover, so it reads as constellation instead of as surface, and there are long stretches of bare net between the motifs where you can see straight through to whatever is underneath. That is what stops it being a costume. It also explains why the house recommends wearing it over one of its Without Fail pieces, the term Tibi uses for what a wardrobe is built around rather than what passes through it: the dress is designed with the assumption that something else is doing the work of covering, and that the two layers are read together.

Why we selected it

Occasion dressing is where most houses stop being themselves, and this is the piece that proves Tibi does not. It is a beaded silver dress that still behaves like a Tibi garment: a plain column, no structure imposed on the body, and it is designed to be layered rather than to stand alone. That combination is genuinely rare, and it is why this is the one dress in the house we would suggest to someone who does not think of herself as a person who wears a beaded dress.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent polyamide, in a Japanese nylon tulle. Made in China. Silver. Tank silhouette, midi length, with abstract beaded motifs worked across the net.

Fit notes

A column cut, hanging from the shoulder rather than fitting anywhere, and it runs large and loose by design. The tulle has some give in it, which is unusual for a net and is what keeps the dress from feeling rigid, but the beading does not stretch and the motifs will sit where they are placed. This is drawn as a layer over something rather than as a dress worn alone, which is the more useful thing to know than a size.

Styling

Over the Slip Cami and the Slip Skirt, which is the pairing the house intends and the cleanest version of it. Over The Slip Dress, for the same cloth in one garment rather than two. Under the Cashmere Suiting Liam Blazer with the beading only just visible, which is a better idea than it sounds. Flat shoes.

Care

Beading is the fragile part of any garment that carries it, and on a net it is the only part under load, so this is a dry clean garment and one to hand over with a word about the beads.
