Selvedge denim is woven on narrow shuttle looms, the kind that were standard before the industry moved to wider and faster projectile weaving in the middle of the last century. A shuttle carries the weft back and forth in one continuous thread, so the cloth finishes its own edge rather than being cut from a broader roll, and that finished edge is the clean banded seam you find on the inside of the outseam. Japan kept those looms running after almost everyone else stopped, which is why Japanese selvedge remains the reference point: slower weaving, lower tension, and a denim with irregularity built into it rather than pressed out. What Tibi does with it is the interesting part. Almost all selvedge denim is cut into menswear silhouettes, and the assumption follows the cloth around. The Alec is not that. It sits low, just above the hip, and it is slouchy through the leg, but the leg is sculpted rather than simply wide, so there is a drawn shape holding the volume. Five pockets, minimal hardware, and no distressing at all, which leaves the cloth to be the entire argument. It is one of the house’s Without Fail pieces, its term for what a wardrobe is built around rather than what passes through it.

Why we selected it

We wanted one jean from this house that does the work of a foundation rather than the work of a statement, and this is it. The cloth is the reason: a proper Japanese selvedge in a cut drawn for a woman is a narrower category than it should be, and most of what fills it is either a menswear jean resized or a novelty shape cut in ordinary denim. This is neither, and the wash is the only real decision left to make about it.

The wash

Classic Blue is the paler of the two, a mid indigo that reads as an actual blue rather than as a near-black. It is the more casual of the pair by some distance and the one that behaves like a jean in an outfit rather than like a trouser. Against black it reads as contrast; against navy and grey it sits easily. The wash also decides how the jean ages. A paler indigo has less dye left on the yarn to lose, so it changes slowly and evenly rather than dramatically, and the high-wear points at the knee and the seat soften into the surrounding cloth instead of standing out against it. If you want a jean that looks much the same in three years as it does now, this is the one.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent cotton, in a Japanese selvedge denim. Classic Blue. Five-pocket construction with minimal detailing.

Fit notes

Low rise, sitting just above the hip, with a slouchy but sculpted straight leg. This denim is finished and washed rather than raw, so it arrives at the colour it will largely stay and it does not need breaking in. A rigid cotton with no elastane will not stretch to fit, so the waist is the decision and it will relax a little across a day of wear rather than over months.

Styling

With the Washable Cashmere Oversize Easy T, which is the whole outfit. Under the Tropical Wool Liam Blazer for the version that goes to work. With the Sheer Wool Gauze Oversized Shirt open over a tank in warm weather.

Care

Finished denim wants washing cold, inside out, and hanging to dry, which protects the indigo from the two things that actually take it off, heat and friction. Note that this is not raw denim, so none of the no-wash advice that follows raw denim around applies here. Our care guidance covers denim, including how selvedge differs.
