Tibi Tie Dye Denim Tuck Jean

Tie dye on denim is a stranger idea than it first appears, and the strangeness is the reason it works. Denim is already a dyed cloth in a very specific way: the warp yarns are dyed indigo and the weft is left white, which is why the face of a jean is blue, the back is pale, and every fade that ever formed on a pair of jeans is the white core showing through. Tie dye works on the finished cloth instead, binding and resisting the surface so the colour lifts unevenly in patterns nobody drew. Putting the second on top of the first means two entirely different dye logics running at once, one structural and one applied, which produces a blue that moves across the leg rather than sitting flat on it. The cut is the other half. The house describes the Tuck as sitting between the balloon shape of its Sid jean and the straight leg of its Slouchy Carpenter, and that is exactly where it lands: volume through the thigh that collapses into a straight line below the knee, so the leg has a sculpted shape rather than simply a wide one. The seams are left exposed. On a jean that already refuses to be quiet, hiding the construction would have been the inconsistent choice.

Why we selected it

This one closed a Tibi runway show, and it is here because a store that only carries the reasonable half of a house is not really carrying the house. It is also more wearable than the description suggests, which is the part we did not expect and the reason it stayed.

Tibi was founded by Amy Smilovic in 1997, and the Tuck is the jean the house uses to say something rather than to underwrite everything else.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent cotton, in an Italian denim with a tie dye finish. Made in China. Tie dye blue. Sculpted leg with exposed seams.

Fit notes

Volume through the thigh narrowing to a straight leg, so it reads fuller than a standard jean above the knee and no wider below it. A rigid cotton denim with no elastane will not give with wear in the way a stretch jean does, so the waist is the fit decision. The tie dye means the pattern falls differently on every pair, so two of the same size will not look identical.

Styling

With a plain tee, which is what the house recommends and what the jean actually needs, since it is already the loudest thing in any outfit it appears in. Under the Cavalier Twill Shrunken Blazer if you want to argue with it. The Pebble Sable Square Neck Cross Back Tank in white against the blue is the cleanest version.

Care

A tie dye finish sits on the surface of the cloth rather than in the yarn, so it is the part that heat and hard washing will take off. Wash cold, inside out, and hang to dry. No dryer. Our care guidance covers denim in more detail.
