Tibi Shirred Nylon Hoodie with Cocoon Back

Two opposite techniques are doing the work on this one, and putting them on the same garment is the idea. Shirring is rows of elastic thread run through the cloth so it gathers permanently and stretches back again, and it is how a garment gets held to the body without a seam, a dart, or a fastening. A cocoon back is the reverse: a panel cut with deliberate extra width that swells out behind and returns to the hem, so the volume stands away from the frame rather than following it. One pulls in, the other pushes out, and a hoodie built with both is fitted exactly where fit matters and loose everywhere it does not.

The cloth is what allows the contrast to read. An ultra-light Japanese taffeta is a tightly woven filament fabric with a crisp, papery hand, and crispness is precisely what both techniques need: a gather is only sharp in a cloth that holds a crease, and a cocoon only reads as a curve in a cloth that will stand away on its own. A soft jersey would blur both into the same shapelessness. What you end up with is a hoodie that weighs nothing, packs into nothing, and still has a definite outline, which is why the house counts it among its Without Fail pieces, the term Tibi uses for what a wardrobe is built around rather than what passes through it.

Why we selected it

A hoodie is the garment most likely to be the least considered thing a person owns, and this is the opposite of that without stopping being a hoodie. It is also genuinely a year-round piece in this climate: light enough to be the only layer in warm weather and thin enough to go under a coat in cold, which very few things manage at both ends.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent polyester, in a Japanese ultra-light taffeta. Made in China. Aubergine. Hooded, with shirring holding the body and a cocoon-cut back panel.

Fit notes

Held at the shirring and full through the back, so it reads close in one place and voluminous in another by design rather than by fit. The shirring has real stretch in it and will accommodate a range, which makes this forgiving to buy. It layers over a tank or a fine knit easily; the cocoon back means it will not sit flat under a close-cut jacket, so it wants a coat rather than a blazer over it.

Styling

Care

The shirring is elastic thread, and heat is what destroys elastic permanently, so this garment’s care is decided by the part you cannot see.
