Two opposite techniques are doing the work on this one, and putting them on the same garment is the idea. Shirring is rows of elastic thread run through the cloth so it gathers permanently and stretches back again, and it is how a garment gets held to the body without a seam, a dart, or a fastening. A cocoon back is the reverse: a panel cut with deliberate extra width that swells out behind and returns to the hem, so the volume stands away from the frame rather than following it. One pulls in, the other pushes out, and a hoodie built with both is fitted exactly where fit matters and loose everywhere it does not.

The cloth is what allows the contrast to read. An ultra-light Japanese taffeta is a tightly woven filament fabric with a crisp, papery hand, and crispness is precisely what both techniques need: a gather is only sharp in a cloth that holds a crease, and a cocoon only reads as a curve in a cloth that will stand away on its own. A soft jersey would blur both into the same shapelessness.
