Tibi Tropical Wool Sleeveless Paneled Tunic

A tunic is a simple outline, and the only way to give a simple outline a body is to cut it in pieces. That is what the panelling here is for, and it is doing two jobs at once. A seam placed with intent lets the garment curve where a single flat panel could only hang, so the tunic has dimension through the body rather than falling straight from the shoulder. And a seam released in the right place gives movement to a sleeveless shape, which otherwise pulls at exactly the points where there is no sleeve to absorb it.

The cloth is what allows the panels to hold. Tibi’s tropical wool is a blend engineered to behave like a summer worsted, and the small percentage of elastane in it is why: it recovers, so a seam line stays crisp through a day of sitting down rather than softening into a crease. A soft cloth would give this garment back the shapelessness the panels were cut to remove. The hidden pockets are the last thing, and on a sleeveless tunic they are less obvious than they sound: a garment with no sleeves and no waistband has very few places to put a pocket, and putting them inside the panel seams is the only way to have them without breaking the line.

Why we selected it

The navy is most of the reason. This house’s tropical wool pieces are otherwise black, so a navy in the same cloth does not make a matched set with them; it goes over and under them instead, which is a more useful thing than a fourth black garment. The panelling is the other reason, and it is what makes this a piece of construction rather than a sleeveless top.

Fifty-three percent polyester, forty-three percent wool, and four percent elastane, in the house’s tropical wool. Made in China. Navy. Sleeveless, built from shaped panels, with hidden pockets.

Fit notes

Cut clean and drawn to hang with dimension rather than to fit closely, so it reads as shape rather than as volume. The elastane gives movement without ease, which means it holds its line through a day rather than relaxing into one. Sleeveless and panelled, so the fit decision is at the shoulder and the armhole, and there is nothing below that to negotiate. It layers over a fine knit and under a jacket without bulk.

Styling

Care

Wool blended with polyester and elastane cannot take heat: it destroys the elastane’s recovery permanently, and once that has gone the panels stop holding, which is the whole garment.
