Yeung Chin Cowl Neck One Piece Dress A

A cowl is a piece of cloth cut on the bias and hung loose so that it falls into folds by itself, and it is the only detail in dressmaking that is genuinely made by gravity rather than by a pattern. Putting one on an asymmetric, layered dress is a deliberate contrast: everything else in this garment is a decision about where an edge goes, and the neck is the one place the cloth is allowed to decide for itself. The layers are the other half of it. A dress built in layers reads as depth rather than as surface, and in black, where a single plane of cloth would flatten out entirely, layering is more or less the only way to keep a shape legible at all. It is made by hand, and it is cotton, which is an unusual fiber to build a layered dress from, because cotton has none of the natural fall of a silk or a viscose and every fold in it has to be constructed rather than encouraged.
