Yeung Chin Wool Felted Pants

Felting is the one thing wool does that no other common fiber does, and it is usually a disaster. Wool fibers are covered in microscopic scales, and under moisture, heat, and agitation together those scales ratchet past each other and cannot ratchet back. That is what has happened to the sweater somebody washed wrong. Done on purpose and under control, it is a way of making cloth: the fibers migrate into each other until the structure is dense, matted, and continuous, and the resulting cloth does not ravel, which means it can be cut and left without a seam finish. It also behaves differently from anything woven. It has body without stiffness, it holds a shape rather than draping into one, and it is warm out of proportion to its weight because all that matting traps air. These are cut wide through the leg and cropped at the ankle, which is the right response to a cloth with this much body in it: a narrow leg in a felted wool would read as upholstery, and a wide one reads as volume. There is a button and a zip at the waist, which is worth saying because a felted cloth is thick enough that a waist closure is a real piece of engineering rather than an afterthought.

Why we selected it

Felted wool is a cloth most people have only ever encountered as an accident, and seeing it done deliberately is genuinely clarifying. We also wanted one trouser in the store with real weight in it, since so much of what we are offered in a trouser is built to move and nothing else.

Yeung Chin’s study of Miao technique took in batik, hand embroidery, and folding, all of which are ways of making a cloth do something it was not doing before, and felting belongs to the same family of thinking.

Fit notes

Wide through the leg and cropped at the ankle, so the shape is a volume rather than a line and the crop is what keeps the volume from swallowing the foot. Felted wool has body and very little drape, which means it holds the shape it is cut into rather than falling around the body, so what you see on the hanger is close to what you get. It has almost no give, so size for the waist honestly.

Styling

With the Oversize Shirt, where a very heavy cloth under a very light one is the whole point. With the Kimono Shirt in linen for the same reason. The Crop Vest Jacket works over either.

Care

This cloth has already been felted once, and everything that felted it will felt it further. Heat, moisture, and agitation in combination are what shrink and matt wool, and none of it reverses, so this is a trouser to have cleaned rather than washed, and never one to put in a machine or a dryer. Between wearings, air it and brush it rather than cleaning it, which is true of most wool and truer here. Our care guidance covers the rest.
