Yeung Chin Embroidered Long Pants

An overlay is not a pattern. A pattern is printed or woven into a cloth and lives in the same plane as it; an overlay is a second, separate cloth laid over the first, and the two are held apart by nothing except their own thickness. That difference is visible from across a room. Lace is openwork, which means the ground cloth shows through the holes, so an overlaid lace reads as two depths at once and the effect shifts as the leg moves and the gap between the layers opens and closes. Here it runs throughout rather than sitting as a panel, which is the more expensive way to do it and the only way that makes the whole trouser one object rather than a plain trouser with a decorated section. In black, the lace and the ground are close in tone and what you notice is texture. In white, the shadow inside each opening does the work and what you notice is the pattern. Same garment, two quite different readings.

A lace overlay usually turns up as a panel, because covering a whole garment in it costs more and is harder to cut. Running it throughout is the version that convinced us.

Yeung Chin's recent work comes out of technique studied at first hand rather than borrowed at a distance, and layering one cloth over another is the most literal form of that.

One hundred percent cotton. Overlaid lace detail throughout. Made in Hong Kong. Available in Black and in White. What the lace is made from is not stated separately, so the composition above should be read as the record gives it, covering the garment rather than distinguishing the two layers.

An overlaid cloth adds a layer of thickness without adding structure, so these read heavier than they weigh and hang the way a plain cotton trouser would. Cotton has little recovery, so expect the knee and seat to soften across a day. The openwork will catch on jewelry and on zips, which is a fit note as much as a care note, because it decides what you can wear over it.

In black: under the Crop Vest Jacket or the Embroider T-Shirt, where the texture is the only thing being asked to show. In white: with the Embroidered Top – Cream, where the two pale cloths are close enough to read as one outfit and different enough not to look like a set. Either color goes under the Oversize Shirt.

Openwork catches, on itself and on everything else in a wash, so this is a garment for a mesh bag or for hand washing and never for a load with hardware in it. Otherwise it is cotton: cool water, no heat, air dry. Our care guidance covers the rest.
