Yeung Chin Embroidered Top – Cream

White on cream is a deliberately narrow interval, and narrow intervals are where tonal dressing either works or curdles. Put white lace on a white ground and it disappears; put it on a color and it announces itself; put it on cream and it sits a half-step apart, warm underneath and cool on top, visible without being the subject. The top is draped rather than tailored, which means the shape comes from how the cloth is arranged on the body rather than from seams cut to a pattern, and draping in cotton is harder than draping in anything else because cotton does not fall on its own and every fold has to be put there. The back is open. That is the structural fact the rest of the garment has to work around, since an open back removes the part of a top that normally holds it on, and everything else has to be arranged to compensate.

Why we selected it

Draped cotton is genuinely difficult and almost nobody bothers, because the same shape in a viscose takes a fraction of the work. We wanted the one that had been worked out rather than draped by the fiber.

Yeung Chin came to his own practice from mass-market production, and a draped garment is where the engineering side of that is doing the most work.

Fit notes

Draped rather than cut to size, so the fit is looser at every point than a tailored top of the same size, and the shape depends more on how it is put on than on which size it is. The back is open, which decides what can be worn underneath it, and there is no fastening described anywhere in what we hold.

Styling

With the Embroidered Long Pants in white, which is the closest tonal version and works because one is draped and one is tailored. With the Wool Felted Pants, where a draped cotton over a dense wool is the point of the pairing. The Cheongsam Cropped Shirt shares the cream if you want to layer within the tone.

Care

Openwork and drape both want the same thing, which is not to be tumbled: lace catches, and a draped cotton loses the arrangement it was pressed into. Hand wash cool, dry flat, and press it back rather than expecting it to come out of a wash as it went in. Our care guidance covers the rest.
