4S Designs W. Utility Pant- Navy

A utility trouser is defined by its pockets and by the assumption that it will be used, which is why utility trousers are almost always cut from cotton, canvas, or something ripstop. This one is entirely viscose, and the substitution is the whole point of it. Viscose has no crimp and no memory, so it hangs rather than standing, and a pocket cut into a fluid cloth reads as a fold rather than as a box. The surface is a jacquard stripe, flocked. Flocking is the application of short fibers to a surface so that they stand up from it, which gives a raised, velvety line rather than a woven or printed one, and laid over a jacquard it means the stripe exists twice: once in the weave and once standing off it. Navy, and navy is the right choice for a cloth doing this much, because the texture only becomes visible when the color stops competing with it.

Why we selected it

The utility trouser is a shape almost nobody re-thinks, because the shape works. Changing the cloth instead of the shape is the more interesting move, and this is a considered version of it.

Taking a functional shape and cutting it in a cloth that argues with the function is how this house usually works, and a flocked jacquard utility trouser is that at its most literal.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent viscose, with a flocked jacquard stripe. Utility pockets. Color: Navy. We do not hold a country of origin for this piece, and most of the rest of this collection states one, so nothing is assumed from the others.

Fit notes

Sized 48 and 50 on the Italian trouser scale. Viscose has almost no elasticity and almost no recovery, so this will relax across a day at the knee and the seat and come back with hanging rather than with pressing. Pockets carrying weight will pull a soft cloth out of line, which is a fair trade and worth knowing before you load them.

Styling

With the Long Sleeve Woven Polo, which is also viscose and also purple-adjacent in register rather than in color, or with the Knit BD Shirt Western. Under the PL Bar Blazer for the softest possible version of a suit. Not with the W Utility Pant‘s own sibling pieces in tweed, where two textures start arguing.

Care

Viscose governs and viscose loses strength when wet, so keep this out of a machine and have it cleaned. A flocked surface should never be pressed directly, because heat and pressure crush the raised fibers permanently. Our care guidance covers the rest.
