4S Designs Wide Camp Shirt

A pattern made from transparency behaves differently from a pattern made from color, and that is the whole subject of this shirt. Where the cloth is opaque it reads as solid black. Where it is semi-sheer it reads as whatever is behind it, which on a body means skin and on a layer means the layer. So the pattern is not fixed: it changes with what you wear underneath and with how the light falls, and it disappears entirely against a dark ground. The camp cut is the right frame for it, because a camp shirt is worn open and loose, which keeps the cloth moving and off the body, and the pattern needs both of those to be legible. Cut wide, which is a decision in the same direction. Seventy-one percent cotton, with polyester, polyamide, and a small remainder of other fibers doing the structural work that lets a single cloth carry two densities.

Why we selected it

A shirt whose pattern depends on what you put under it is a genuinely different object from a printed shirt, and it is the kind of thing that only works if the weaving is good. This one is.

Building the interest into the structure of the cloth rather than onto its surface is what this house does, and a two-density weave is the most technical version of it in the collection.

Materials and construction

Seventy-one percent cotton, thirteen percent polyester, eleven percent polyamide, and five percent other fibers, woven with semi-sheer and opaque areas in one cloth. Made in Italy. Camp collar, cut wide. Color: Black.

Fit notes

Sized M and L. Cut wide means it hangs off the shoulder rather than following it, which is deliberate and is what keeps the sheer sections away from the body. A camp collar sits flat and open by design and does not want a tie or a buttoned neck.

Styling

Over the Long Sleeve Woven Polo if you want the sheer sections to read as a second color, or over nothing if you want them to read as skin. With the Triple Pleat Pant or the H. Sartorial Pant, both black, so the shirt is the only thing patterned.

Care

Cotton at seventy-one percent governs, but the sheer sections are the fragile part and they are the whole garment, so wash cool and gently or have it cleaned, and never wring it. Press on the reverse at moderate heat, because the polyester and polyamide will not take a hot iron. Our care guidance covers the rest.
