Comme des Garçons Wide Crop Trouser

A wide leg and a full length together make a lot of trouser, and the usual result is that the shoe disappears and the whole outfit ends in a puddle of cloth. Cropping solves it in one move. Ending the leg above the ankle puts a hard stop where the body is narrowest, so the width above it reads as deliberate volume rather than as excess, and it gives the shoe somewhere to be seen. Cotton is the right cloth for that shape because it has weight without stiffness: it falls straight from the hip and holds the width open instead of clinging, and it creases where the leg bends, which is a wide trouser telling you honestly what it has been doing. The waist is elastic and the pockets sit in the side seams, so nothing interrupts the line.

Why we selected it

The easy cotton trouser is the thing people reach for first and buy last. This one has a shape rather than just a fit.

The main line’s plainest garments are usually the ones with the most decided proportions, and a cropped wide leg on an elastic waist is a very decided proportion indeed.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent cotton. Made in Japan. Wide leg, cropped, elastic waist, side pockets. Color: beige.

Fit notes

An elastic waist accommodates rather than fits, so this is a trouser to choose by length and by hip. The crop lands above the ankle, which means the length is the thing to check first and the one that cannot be adjusted upward. Cotton creases and softens with wearing and comes back with pressing.

Styling

With the Single Breasted Blazer, cut in the same beige cotton and the obvious partner for it. With the Ruffle Chest LS Button Up or the Crispy Organy Button-Up, where a sheer black top over a beige cotton bottom is the least expected version. Shoes should be visible; that is what the crop is for.

Care

Cotton washes warm and honestly, shrinks a little the first time if it has not been preshrunk, and presses best while slightly damp. Nothing about this trouser needs special handling. Our care guidance covers cotton in more detail.
