NemeN 3L Sphere Shell Jacket

Three-layer means three cloths bonded into one. A face fabric on the outside takes the abrasion and carries the water-repellent finish, a membrane in the middle does the actual work of stopping wind and water, and a backing on the inside protects the membrane from your body and from everything your body does to it. The alternative, and it is much more common, is a two-layer construction with a loose lining hung inside, which is cheaper to make, softer in the hand, and considerably less durable, because the membrane is the fragile part and a loose lining does not defend it. Bonding all three is a slower process that produces a stiffer, quieter, longer-lived garment, and it is why a shell like this holds its shape after a winter instead of going limp. The face here is a nylon ripstop, woven with a reinforcing grid so that a tear meets a heavier yarn and stops. The pockets are large and set at the chest, above where a pack strap or a bag would sit, and the hood draws in on elastic cords rather than on a toggle-and-tape arrangement that goes slack. The color is Shade Vapor, which is NemeN’s name for it and which the label writes rather than we do. Made in Italy.

Why we selected it

We wanted one piece of real weather protection that a person would wear into town without looking equipped for a mountain, and almost everything built to this standard fails that test on sight. This one is engineered where you find it with your hands rather than with your eyes, which is the only kind of performance clothing that is still worth owning in ten years.

NemeN came out of the Italian technical-outerwear tradition and this is the garment in the line where that inheritance is most literal.

One hundred percent nylon, woven as a ripstop and built as a bonded three-layer shell. Water-repellent and windproof. Large chest pockets and an adjustable hood with elastic cords. Color: Shade Vapor. Made in Italy.

Fit notes

A three-layer shell has no drape in it, so it holds its own volume rather than following the body, and it is cut to go over layers. Size for what you intend to wear underneath, which is what the Nover Quilted Liner and the Nor 3D Knitted Vest are for. The stiffness softens with wearing and never becomes softness; that is the construction, not a break-in period.

Care

Wash a technical shell rarely, gently, and cool, with a technical detergent rather than a household one: ordinary detergent leaves a residue that holds water against the face fabric and makes a working shell behave like a failing one. Never fabric-soften it, never dry clean it, and never press it. Our care guidance covers the rest.
