NemeN Nover Quilted Liner
$467.00
A liner is the layer nobody photographs and everybody relies on. The design problem is bulk: a mid-layer has to hold warmth without adding the volume that stops a shell from closing over it, and almost every solution to that is a compromise in one direction or the other. The moves here are all about flatness. Raglan sleeves run the seam diagonally from the collar to the underarm instead of setting a sleeve into a shoulder seam, which removes the ridge that a set-in sleeve creates exactly where a shell’s shoulder needs to sit smoothly, and it gives the arm more range besides. The chest pocket is welted rather than patched, so it is a slit in the surface instead of a layer on top of it. The quilting holds a polyester fill in place so it cannot migrate to the hem, and the nylon shell takes the friction of a shell sliding over it. It works alone in a mild season, which is worth knowing about a garment sold as a liner. Made in Italy.
Why we selected it
Most quilted mid-layers are outerwear that has been demoted, and they wear like it under a shell. This one is designed from the start to have something over it, which is why the sleeves and the pocket are built the way they are.
NemeN builds outerwear as a set rather than as single pieces, and this liner is the middle term of that set.
Materials and construction
One hundred percent nylon, quilted, with a polyester fill. Raglan sleeves and a welted chest pocket. Color: Grey. Made in Italy.
Fit notes
Cut flat rather than full, so it fits under a shell without the shell having to be sized up. Raglan sleeves give more shoulder movement than a set-in sleeve at the same chest measurement, which is worth knowing if you are between sizes. A quilted garment holds its own shape and does not follow the body.
Styling
Under the 3L Sphere Shell Jacket, which is what it is cut for. Over the Ash Jumbo Pocket T-shirt on its own in a mild season. With the Rise Multipocket Parachute Pant in Pale Olive or Vulcan Soil, where the grays sit together.
Care
Wash a filled garment cool and on its own, and dry it fully before wearing it, because a fill that is still damp at the seams will stay damp. Do not press quilting: heat flattens loft and the loft is the warmth. Our care guidance covers the rest.
