NemeN Nor 3D Knitted Vest

The word doing the work in the name is “3D.” This is a knit with woven technical panels built into the back and the sides, which means the garment is not one surface with a trim on it but two different cloths meeting at a structural seam, and the seam is placed where a vest actually needs to change behavior. The knitted front holds warmth and gives with the chest. The nylon at the back and under the arms is where a vest gets dragged against a chair, a strap, or a jacket sleeve, and it is the part that would pill first if it were knitted. The main body is 70 percent recycled polyester and 30 percent polyester, which is to say it is polyester throughout with most of the yarn reclaimed, and the technical detailing is 59 percent cotton and 41 percent nylon. The color is given as Medium Grey and black, two tones on one garment, which follows the construction: the two cloths are not pretending to be one.

Why we selected it

A vest is the layer people reach for most and think about least. This one is built around where a vest wears out rather than around how it looks folded, which is a rarer piece of thinking than it should be.

NemeN develops cloth before it develops garments, and this vest is the clearest case in the line of a piece designed backwards from two cloths rather than forwards from a shape.

Fit notes

A vest with woven panels in it does not stretch the way an all-knit vest does, because the back and sides have no give in them. Size for the chest and expect the garment to hold its width rather than follow yours. It is cut to go under a shell rather than over one.

Styling

Under the 3L Sphere Shell Jacket, which is what the nylon panels are there to survive. Over the Ash Jumbo Pocket T-shirt in Grey. With the Rise Multipocket Parachute Pant in Pale Olive, where the two grays sit close enough to be quiet.

Care

A polyester knit and a nylon panel both want cool water and no heat at all, so wash gently, never tumble, and do not press this garment. Dry flat rather than on a hanger: there is no recovery in a recycled polyester knit to pull a stretched shoulder back. Our care guidance covers the rest.
