Tibi Winslow Pant- black

The composition is the whole story here, and it is an unusual one. Fifty-nine percent polyamide, thirty-eight percent cotton, three percent elastane is not a blend most houses reach for, because blending three fibres is expensive and most trousers pick one property and accept the consequences. This one is answering all three of the ways an everyday trouser fails. It wears through, so there is polyamide, which is the most abrasion-resistant thing you can put in a cloth. It feels synthetic, so there is cotton, at better than a third, which is what puts a matte natural surface and a natural hand against the skin. And it goes baggy at the seat and the knee, so there is elastane, at the small percentage that gives recovery without turning a trouser into activewear.

What that produces is a wide-leg trouser you can wear four days a week for years. The Winslow’s hem snaps are here as they are on its sibling, so the length is set by the wearer rather than by a tailor, and the shape is drawn full through the leg rather than close, which is what keeps a blended cloth from reading as performance wear. It is a plain garment, and the interest in it is entirely in the engineering.

Why we selected it

We carry the Winslow in two cloths because they are two different trousers with one name, and this is the one for wearing rather than for looking at. It is the trouser somebody puts on without thinking on a Tuesday, which is a category we take seriously and which most houses do not bother to make well.

Materials and construction

Fifty-nine percent polyamide, thirty-eight percent cotton, and three percent elastane. Black. Wide leg, with snaps at the hem that adjust the length.

Fit notes

Cut wide through the leg, with the hem snaps setting the length rather than an alteration. The three percent elastane gives real recovery rather than stretch, which means it returns to shape rather than growing across a day, so take the waist that is comfortable now. A blend this high in polyamide holds its line and will not relax into a larger trouser with wear the way a pure cotton would.

Styling

With the Washable Cashmere Oversize Easy T and a flat shoe, which is the whole of an ordinary day. Under the Tropical Wool Liam Blazer, black on black in two entirely different cloths. With the Sculpted Cotton Long Sleeve Top in white, where something rigid on top of something that moves is the point.

Care

Elastane is the fibre that decides how this trouser is washed, because heat destroys its recovery permanently and there is no repairing it afterwards. Wash cool, hang to dry, and never use a dryer.
