Tibi Crispy Nylon Winslow Pant

Length is the thing trousers get wrong most often and the thing that cannot be fixed without a tailor and a permanent decision. The Winslow solves it with snaps set inside the back hem: fasten them and the hem comes up, release them and it goes back down, and neither state is a compromise or looks like an alteration. That means one trouser genuinely works with a flat shoe and with a heel, and it means a trouser that fits two people who are not the same height.

The waist is the other half of the idea. It is a covered elastic with a drawstring running through it, so there is no fly, no button, and nothing to fasten, and the trouser goes on without a decision in it. That combination, adjustable at both ends and fixed at neither, is why the house counts the Winslow among its Without Fail pieces, the term Tibi uses for what a wardrobe is built around rather than what passes through it. Crispy nylon is the house’s name for the hand of the cloth, and it is accurate: a polyamide-led woven finished so it is dry and papery rather than slick, which is what lets a barrel leg hold its curve instead of collapsing against the leg.

Why we selected it

This is the trouser people buy and then live in, which is a different category from the trouser people buy and admire. Every decision on it has been removed, and what is left is a proper garment rather than a lounge one. The barrel leg is the part that keeps it from being sportswear.

Materials and construction

Fifty-five percent polyamide and forty-five percent polyester, in the house’s crispy nylon. Made in China. Barrel leg with interior snaps at the back hem, a covered elastic waist with an interior drawstring, slant hip pockets, and a patch pocket at the back.

Fit notes

Cut with a barrel leg, so it is full through the thigh and turns back in below the knee, and the length is adjustable at the hem rather than fixed. The elastic waist absorbs a good deal of size variation, which makes this a forgiving trouser to buy: take your usual size and set the drawstring. There is no give in the cloth itself, so the ease comes from the cut and the waistband rather than from stretch.

Styling

With the Washable Cashmere Oversize Easy T, soft against technical, which is the pairing the cloth is asking for. Under the Tropical Wool Liam Blazer, hem snapped up, for the version that goes to work. With the Pebble Sable Square Neck Cross Back Tank in summer.

Care

A polyamide and polyester woven washes easily and cannot take heat, which glazes the surface and takes the crispness out permanently, and crispness is the entire hand of this cloth.
