Pleats and cargo pockets are two ways of adding volume to a trouser and they usually cancel each other out. A pleat releases fullness from the waist downward and wants a clean line below it; a cargo pocket adds bulk at the thigh and wants a plain block above it. Putting both on one garment only works if the cloth will hold each of them separately, and crispy nylon is the reason this one does. It is the house’s name for a polyamide-led woven finished so that it is dry and papery rather than slick, and papery is the operative word: a cloth with that hand holds a fold open instead of letting it fall shut, and it lets a patch pocket lie against the leg instead of standing away from it. Stella is one of the house’s trouser names rather than a single style, and this is the version of it with the most happening.

Why we selected it

Cargo trousers are a crowded category and almost all of them are cotton, which makes them casual by default. A cargo in a technical woven is a different proposition: it takes a blazer, it does not crease across the lap, and it goes into a bag and comes out again. That is the reason, and the pleats are what keep it from reading as workwear.

Materials and construction

Fifty-five percent polyamide and forty-five percent polyester, in the house’s crispy nylon. Made in China. Navy. Pleated at the front, with cargo pockets.

Fit notes

Cut to sit mid rise, just below the natural waist and above the high hip, with the pleats releasing volume through the top block. There is no elastane in the cloth, so the waist is the fit decision and there is nothing to negotiate afterwards. The cargo pockets add real volume at the thigh, which is intentional and should not be sized away.

Styling

With the Washable Cashmere Oversize Easy T, soft against technical, which is the pairing this cloth is asking for. Under the Cavalier Twill Shrunken Blazer, which is what makes it read as tailoring rather than as utility. With the Pebble Sable Square Neck Cross Back Tank, white against the navy.

Care

A polyamide and polyester woven washes easily and cannot take heat, which glazes the surface and takes the crispness out permanently, and crispness is the entire hand of this cloth. Wash cool, hang to dry, no dryer, and do not press the pleats flat. Our care guidance covers nylon and technical cloth.
